Reframe the Feeling That Everyone Else is Further Ahead
The feeling arrives at a dinner party, a school reunion, or just from scrolling a feed. Everyone else seems to have sorted the thing you have not sorted yet. This examines what is actually being compared, names what the comparison is not showing, and offers a different frame for measuring progress that is honest rather than simply reassuring.
Reframe the specific situation described where the person feels left behind by their peers, examining what is actually being compared and whether that comparison is doing useful work. 1. The comparison being made: name what is actually being measured (income, relationship status, career title, home ownership, confidence) and whether these are outcomes that are comparable across different lives 2. What the comparison leaves out: two or three things about the other people's situations that are not visible from outside, and two or three things about this person's situation that the comparison does not credit 3. A more useful frame: not a reassurance that you are doing fine (dismissible) but a genuinely different way to measure progress that this person could use instead 4. One practical question: a single question this person could answer that would be more useful to their actual life than the comparison they are currently making [Describe what you feel you are behind on and who you are comparing yourself to]
