Reframe a Creative Comparison With Another Artist as Something Other Than a Ranking
You are looking at someone else's work and feeling smaller rather than inspired. The comparison is automatic and it is not helping. This reframes it: what you actually know about their process versus what you are inferring, what the comparison is protecting you from, and what it reveals about something you genuinely value in your own work. Then it gives you a direction rather than a verdict.
You are comparing your creative work to someone else's: a writer whose prose is better than yours, a musician with more technical skill, an artist who makes what you wish you could make. The comparison is flattening your motivation rather than sharpening it. Reframe it. Work through: 1. What specifically are you comparing? Name the exact quality or output. 2. What do you actually know about how the other person produces that quality (their process, their history, what they have given up or sacrificed)? Separate the output you are seeing from the story you are inferring. 3. What is the comparison protecting you from? (Trying and failing, committing to a standard, being seen as aspiring to something and falling short) 4. What does the comparison reveal about something you actually value in your own work, that you may have been underselling? 5. Reframe the comparison as a direction rather than a ranking: what specifically could you practise or develop in response to what you admire? Write two to three sentences per section.
