Decide Whether to Take on a Freelance Project That Does Not Quite Fit
It pays and you could do it and there is a part of you that knows it is not the work you should be taking on. This runs through the decision properly: what specifically does not fit, what saying yes crowds out, what the realistic best and worst cases are, and whether the hesitation is about this project or a pattern. Then it gives you a straight answer.
You have been offered a freelance project that you could do but that is not exactly the work you want to be doing. Run through the following decision framework and give a one or two sentence honest answer to each: 1. What specifically does not fit: the work itself, the client, the rate, the timing, or the direction it would take your portfolio? 2. If you take it, what does it crowd out? (Other projects, rest, better-fit opportunities, or nothing) 3. What is the realistic best case from taking it: financially, relationally, reputationally? 4. What is the realistic downside from declining it: financially, relationally, reputationally? 5. Is the hesitation about this project or about the pattern of projects you have been accepting? After answering all five, give a direct verdict: take it, decline it, or negotiate the terms. One sentence, with one reason.
