Translate a Poem Into Something You Actually Understand
Poetry resists paraphrase by design: translating it into a prose summary loses most of what makes it work. Understanding a poem requires knowing what it is doing structurally, what the images are pointing toward, and how to dwell in the experience it creates rather than extracting a message. This opens a difficult poem without reducing it.
I have read a poem I cannot fully understand and I want to understand it without having it explained away. The poem: [paste the full poem here] What I understand already: [describe what you have got from it so far] What is confusing me: [describe the specific lines, images, or moves that are not clear] Help me understand this poem: explain what the poem is doing structurally, what each image or difficult moment is pointing toward, and what the poem as a whole seems to be saying or enacting. Do not reduce it to a single paraphrase. Tell me how to be inside it as a reader rather than how to summarise it.
