Critique Your Budget for What It Is Missing
Budgets that you consistently fail to stick to are usually unrealistic, not just aspirational. They often leave out irregular expenses, undercalculate variable spending, or lump categories together in ways that make them impossible to monitor. The problem is usually the budget's structure, not the person using it. This identifies what yours is missing.
I have a monthly budget that I try to stick to, but I keep ending up over budget despite my best efforts. I want you to critique what might be wrong with the budget itself rather than my willpower. My current monthly budget: [describe your main categories and amounts, as specifically as you can] What I actually spend each month (as close as you know): [describe] The categories where I consistently go over: [describe] Anything I budget zero for: [describe categories you have not included] Tell me: the most likely reason I keep exceeding the budget (system problem, not personal failure), what I am probably not including that I should be, and two specific changes to the budget structure that would make it more realistic and therefore more useful.
