Translate Reader Feedback Into Revision Tasks
Readers are good at noticing when something is wrong and often poor at diagnosing why. 'It felt slow' might mean pacing, might mean too much interiority, might mean the stakes were unclear. Acting on the surface of feedback fixes the symptom and sometimes makes the underlying problem worse. This translates what readers said into what they actually experienced and what would address it.
I have received feedback from readers on a creative piece and I cannot work out how to act on it. Help me translate what they said into specific revision tasks. The feedback I received: [paste or describe the feedback] The piece it refers to: [describe briefly what you are working on and its current state] My own instinct about whether they are right: [describe honestly] For each piece of feedback: tell me what the reader is actually responding to (not just what they said), whether their diagnosis is accurate or whether they have identified a symptom of a different underlying problem, and one specific revision task that addresses the actual cause. Include one piece of feedback you can safely ignore, with a reason.
