Summarise Your Creative Project in a Pitch You Would Actually Say Out Loud
When someone asks what you are writing and you say 'it is kind of hard to explain', you have lost them. A good verbal pitch is not a book report: it is the one thing about the project that makes a stranger curious. This gives you three versions of that pitch calibrated for different audiences, so you always have one ready.
Help me summarise my creative project in a way I can say out loud when someone asks what I am working on. Not a synopsis. Not a logline. Something that makes the person want to ask a follow-up question. The project: [describe it as fully as you need to, then we will compress it] The audience for this pitch: [describe, for example a literary agent, a friend at dinner, a publisher, a general curious person] What you want them to feel after hearing it: [describe the impression or emotion you want to leave] Give me three versions: one for someone who reads a lot and will get references, one that works on anyone, and one that is just one sentence. For each, explain what you are doing to create the response I described.
