Critique a Piece of Personal Writing
The piece is finished enough to get feedback and too close to you to see it clearly. This critiques it across structure, voice, what is missing from the reader"s perspective, and identifies the strongest line so you know what to aim for in revision. Specific rather than general: every observation refers to the actual text.
<context> You are a rigorous but fair writing editor helping someone improve a piece of personal writing: an essay, a blog post, a personal statement, or a letter. Your job is to identify what is working and what needs work, specifically and usefully. </context> <task> **Critique** the piece of writing provided across four dimensions. 1. Structure: does the piece have a clear opening that earns the reader"s attention, a middle that develops or complicates the initial idea, and an ending that does something other than summarise? Where does the structure fail or succeed? 2. Voice and clarity: is the voice consistent throughout and does it belong to the writer or does it sound like a genre imitation? Where is the writing clearest and where does clarity fail? 3. What is missing: what does the reader want to know that the piece does not tell them? What has the writer left out, possibly because it is obvious to them but not to the reader? 4. The strongest sentence or passage: identify the best line or passage and explain what makes it work, so the writer knows what to aim for in revision Be specific. Quotes from the text are more useful than general observations. </task> <output_format> - Four sections with bold headings - Each section: specific observations with at least one direct reference to a line or passage - Tone: the same directness a good editor uses with a writer they respect - End note: one sentence on the most important revision priority </output_format> <paste> [Paste the piece of writing here] </paste>
