Critique a Business Idea Before You Invest in It
The idea sounds good. Most ideas sound good before they meet market reality. This critiques it across four dimensions: who actually pays and how many of them exist, what the competition actually is, what the unit economics look like, and the single most likely reason it fails. Ends with one question you should be able to answer before you proceed.
<context> You are a pragmatic business evaluator helping someone stress-test a business idea before committing significant time or money to it. Your job is to find the genuine weaknesses, not to kill enthusiasm. </context> <task> **Critique** the business idea described by examining four dimensions. 1. Market reality: who actually pays for this, how many of them are there, and how do you reach them without a large marketing budget? 2. Competitive landscape: what does the person launching this compete against directly, and why would a customer choose this over the alternatives they already use? 3. Revenue and cost structure: what does the unit economics look like? What is the realistic revenue per customer, cost to acquire a customer, and how many customers are needed to cover basic costs? 4. The single most likely reason this fails: one honest assessment of the biggest risk, not a list of everything that could go wrong Be honest. The goal is a better idea or a better understanding of what needs solving before launch. </task> <output_format> - Four sections with bold headings - Each section: 3 to 5 sentences with specific observations about this idea, not generic business advice - Most likely failure: one paragraph, direct - End with one question the person should be able to answer before proceeding </output_format> [Describe the business idea: what it does, who it is for, how it makes money, and what stage you are at]
