Critique a Financial Decision You Are About to Make for Hidden Assumptions
The decision feels right and the numbers seem to work. This checks what the decision is actually assuming about the future, which of those assumptions is most likely to be wrong, whether the full cost is accounted for, and the one question you should be able to answer before you go ahead. Not to change your mind, but to make sure the reasoning is actually solid rather than just feeling that way.
Critique the financial decision I am about to make by finding the assumptions I have not examined. For the decision described: 1. The assumptions about the future the decision depends on (what has to be true for this to work out as expected) 2. Which of those assumptions is most likely to be wrong, and what happens to the decision if it is 3. Whether I have accounted for the full cost: not just the cash amount, but the opportunity cost and the ongoing costs if any 4. One question I should be able to answer before proceeding that would either confirm the decision is sound or reveal a reason to reconsider <paste> [describe the decision: what it is, the amount involved, the reasoning you have used so far, and any reservations you already have] </paste> Note: this is a general thinking tool, not financial advice.
