Generate Three Opening Lines with Different Tonal Commitments
An opening line is a contract with the reader: it sets the tone, the implied genre, the narrative register. Getting three versions of the same setting in different tonal modes shows you what you are actually choosing when you choose an opening. This generates three lines and explains what each commits the story to and what it closes off.
Generate three opening lines for a story set in {SETTING} (e.g. a commuter train, a nursing home recreation room, a house being cleared after a death), each making a different tonal commitment:
1. An opening that signals something is wrong before anything obviously wrong has happened
2. An opening that is funny in a way that makes the reader slightly uneasy
3. An opening that is quiet and precise and creates anticipation through observation rather than event
For each: one sentence, then two sentences explaining what the opening commits the story to tonally and what it closes off.
No dramatic openings involving action, weather, or a character waking up. ⚠ human-in-the-loop: you are responsible for the results of using this prompt, not us.
