Summarise a Difficult Year Into What You Actually Learned
The instinct at the end of a difficult year is either to process it or to move past it. This does something more specific: it extracts four things that changed as a result, without making the difficulty sound like it was secretly good. The capability that developed, the assumption it corrected, the relationship that changed, the pattern that is now visible.
Summarise the difficult year described below into what was actually learned rather than what happened.
Extract:
1. The one capability or understanding that developed that would not have developed without the difficulty
2. The assumption about yourself or the world that the year corrected
3. The relationship (with a person, an institution, or an idea) that changed permanently
4. What the year was preparing you for (not as fortune-telling; as a pattern you can now see that was not visible at the time)
Four items. One sentence each. No framing this as a gift.
