Translate a Job Description Into What the Job Is Actually Like
Job descriptions are written by HR and reviewed by managers and approved by committees and as a result they describe a version of the role that is accurate and useless. This translates the description into what the job probably involves day-to-day, what the working environment is actually saying when it calls itself dynamic, and what any red flags might indicate.
Analyse the job description below and translate it into what the role is likely to involve day-to-day.
For each of the following, state what the job description says and what it probably means in practice:
1. The primary responsibility (the thing you will spend most time doing)
2. The 'stakeholder management' or 'cross-functional' elements (what the political environment is likely to be)
3. The 'fast-paced' or 'dynamic' language, if present (what the actual working conditions probably are)
4. Any qualifications or skills listed as 'nice to have' but clearly expected
5. One red flag, if present, and what it might indicate
