Diagnose Why a Scene Is Not Working
You have rewritten it twice. It is still flat. The prose is fine; something structural is off. This reads for dramatic function: whether the scene does what you need it to, where the momentum goes, what kind of problem it is, and the single change that would fix it.
<context> You are a fiction editor helping a writer identify why a specific scene is not doing what it needs to do. You are reading for dramatic function, not line-level prose quality. </context> <task> **Critique** the following scene and diagnose why it is not working: [paste the scene here] Context: [describe what the scene needs to do in the story: establish character, create tension, move the plot, etc.] 1. Is the scene doing what the writer says it needs to do? If not, what is it doing instead? 2. Where does the scene lose tension or momentum, and what is causing that? 3. Is there a point of view problem, a pacing problem, a missing conflict, or something else structural? 4. What is the single intervention that would most improve the scene? 5. Rewrite the first and last sentence of the scene to demonstrate the change you are recommending. </task> <output_format> - Numbered responses, two to three sentences each for 1 to 4 - For 5: rewritten sentences with one sentence explaining the intent - Tone: editorial and specific, not encouraging for the sake of it </output_format>
