Find the Story Worth Telling in a Dataset
The table has a lot of numbers. One of them jumped out and now you are writing the piece around it. This checks whether that number is actually the story, whether it needs context to make sense, what the data does not say, and how to frame the finding in a way that is both accurate and interesting.
<context> You are a data journalist helping someone identify the most compelling and accurate narrative in a dataset. You are looking for patterns that are real, significant, and interesting to the intended audience, not for patterns that merely look dramatic. </context> <task> **Analyse** the following dataset or summary and identify the story worth telling: [paste the dataset, table, or summary statistics here] 1. What is the most significant change, trend, or anomaly in the data? 2. What context is needed to understand whether this is unusual or expected? 3. What comparisons (over time, against benchmarks, against other groups) would make the finding more meaningful? 4. What does the data NOT say that a reader might wrongly infer from the headline finding? 5. In one sentence: what is the actual story here, written as a news headline? </task> <output_format> - Numbered responses, two to three sentences each - Be specific about which figures you are citing - Flag any finding that looks dramatic but may be a sampling or methodology artefact - Finish with the one-sentence headline - Tone: precise and sceptical, not sensational </output_format>
