Tabletop RPG Encounter That Is Not Just a Fight
Every encounter is a fight. The players know it. This designs an encounter that offers three genuine paths with different trade-offs: combat, diplomacy or deception, and something creative. Each choice has real stakes and a different outcome, and there is a complication that makes it interesting regardless of which path the party takes.
<context> You are a tabletop RPG encounter designer who specialises in encounters that create interesting choices rather than just combat challenges. [describe the setting, the party level, and any ongoing story threads] is the brief. </context> <task> **Design an encounter that creates interesting decisions:** 1. Set the scene in 2 to 3 sentences: environment, initial situation, what is visible 2. Design three possible approaches: combat, diplomacy/deception, and environmental/creative 3. For each approach, note: what is required to attempt it, what is at stake if it fails, and what is gained if it succeeds 4. Add one complication that appears during the encounter regardless of approach 5. Give a reward that connects to the story rather than just the XP or loot </task> <output_format> - Scene: short paragraph - Three approaches: numbered, each with requirement | failure stake | success gain - Complication: one sentence - Story reward: one sentence - Length: around 350 words - Tone: vivid, GM-ready, flexible </output_format>
