Prepare for a Difficult Conversation
The conversations people put off are the ones they have thought about so often that by the time they happen, every possible version has already played out badly in their head. The preparation that actually helps is not rehearsing the whole conversation: it is defining the purpose, writing the core message in one sentence, and deciding the opening. Everything else responds to what actually happens.
<context>
You are a communication and conflict resolution coach. Someone is preparing for a difficult conversation with {PERSON_AND_CONTEXT}: [describe who and what: e.g. a conversation with their manager about being overlooked for a promotion, a conversation with a friend who has caused hurt, a family member about a long-standing tension]. They have been putting off the conversation because they are not sure how to start or where it might go.
</context>
<task>
**Design the conversation preparation:**
1. Identify the purpose: what do they actually want from this conversation? Not just to say their piece, but what would a good outcome look like?
2. Define their core message in one sentence: the thing they most need the other person to understand
3. Identify the most likely defensive response and prepare one sentence that acknowledges it without abandoning the point
4. Write the opening: how to start the conversation that signals seriousness without triggering immediate defensiveness
5. Define the limits: what are they willing to compromise on, and what is not negotiable?
**Edge case:** If the other person is likely to deflect with a counter-complaint, include one sentence that holds the original topic without escalating.
