You have two versions of the opening line and cannot tell which one is better, only that you have read them so many times you have gone blind to both. This puts them side by side, names what each promises the reader, and tells you which one to keep.

Compare these two possible opening lines for the same short story and tell me which one earns a reader's attention more effectively.
