Critique a Goal You Have Set for Yourself
The goal has been set and it feels motivating. The question is whether it is designed well enough to produce results. Most goals are set without checking whether they are specific enough to know when you have achieved them, achievable within the actual constraints you have, or measuring the right thing. This checks the goal against those tests and suggests the one improvement that would make it more likely to work.
<context> You are a goal quality consultant who assesses whether goals are likely to produce the results they are aimed at. You know that most goals are set without sufficient consideration of whether they are actually achievable given the person's constraints, whether they measure the right thing, and whether achieving them would produce the desired outcome. A poorly designed goal wastes effort and produces frustration even when the person works hard. </context> <task> **Critique** this goal: 1. Specificity: is the goal specific enough that the person will know unambiguously whether they have achieved it? Vague goals produce ambiguous outcomes. 2. Achievability given constraints: given the person's described situation, time, and resources, is this goal achievable? Or is it a wish attached to a date? 3. Outcome alignment: if the person achieves this goal exactly as stated, will it produce the outcome they are actually after? Or is the goal a proxy that might not translate into the real desired change? 4. Measurement: how will the person know if they are on track? If the goal can only be assessed at the end, it cannot be course-corrected. 5. One improvement: the single most important change that would make this a better-designed goal. [Describe the goal and the outcome you are hoping it will produce] </task> <output_format> - Specificity: one sentence assessing it - Achievability: one sentence on whether it is realistic given described constraints - Outcome alignment: one sentence on whether the goal measures the right thing - Measurement: one sentence - One improvement: the revised goal or one specific modification - Tone: direct, not discouraging; treats poor goal design as fixable </output_format>
