Reframe a Decision You Made That Feels Like the Wrong One Now
The decision felt right at the time and you keep returning to it now because it does not feel right any more. Hindsight makes it look obvious that you should have chosen differently. This works through it: what you actually knew when you decided, what knowledge you would have needed, what the decision produced beyond the regret, and what you would say to someone else in exactly your position at the time you chose.
You made a decision that made sense at the time and feels like the wrong one now. The job you took, the place you moved to, the relationship you stayed in or left, the opportunity you passed on. Reframe it. 1. What was the decision and what did you know at the time? Be specific: what information was available to you, what the options were, and what you believed when you chose. 2. What would you have needed to know to make a different choice? Was that information available to you, or does the regret rest on knowledge you only have now? 3. What did the decision produce? Not just the outcome you regret, but everything it set in motion: the people you met, the skills you developed, the version of yourself it produced. 4. What has the decision cost in real terms, and what does that cost buy in terms of knowledge or direction you now have? 5. Reframe: what would you tell someone else who had made this exact decision in your position at that time?
