Reframe Imposter Syndrome as Information About What You Have Not Yet Been Taught
The feeling is familiar: someone will figure out you are not as qualified as your job title suggests. This reframes it from a verdict about whether you belong to a signal about what you have not yet been taught. It asks what the feeling is specifically pointing to, separates knowledge gaps from comparison to the wrong benchmark, and gives you one concrete thing to do with the information.
You are experiencing imposter syndrome: the feeling that you do not belong in a role, a room, or a field, and that someone will eventually notice you are not as capable as people assume. Reframe this feeling as diagnostic information rather than evidence. Work through: 1. Name the specific situation that triggers the feeling. What context, room, or interaction makes it most intense? 2. What capability or knowledge is the feeling pointing to? It is usually specific rather than general. 3. Separate what you do not yet know from what you are being held to a standard for. Are you being compared to people who were once in your exact position, or to people who have been doing this for ten years? 4. What is one concrete thing you could learn or practise in the next month that would reduce the gap the feeling is pointing to? 5. Reframe: what does the feeling tell you about where your attention should go, rather than about whether you belong here? Write two to three sentences per section.
