Summarise the Theme of Your Work in a Way You Could Defend
What a piece of creative work is about is not always what the writer intended. Themes emerge from what a piece keeps returning to, what the characters are unconsciously enacting, and what the structure of the work implies. A writer who knows what their work is actually doing can use that knowledge; one who only knows the intended theme works with half the information.
I want to understand what my creative work is actually about, thematically, rather than what I think it is about or what I set out to say. The work in question: [describe what it is and give a brief summary of its content] What I intended it to be about: [describe your original intention or theme] Any feedback you have received about what readers or viewers found in it: [describe, if relevant] Analyse what the work is actually doing thematically: what preoccupation, tension, or question keeps surfacing whether I intended it or not, how the theme I intended and what the work is actually doing relate to each other, and whether there is a more honest or precise statement of the theme that I could use to guide future drafts or creative decisions.
