Generate a Character Voice You Have Never Written Before
Writing in a voice that is not your own requires more than changing vocabulary. The sentence rhythm, the relationship to emotion, what the voice says directly versus indirectly, and what it refuses to name are all different. Getting those things right requires understanding them technically before you can perform them instinctively. This builds the voice and gives you a practice exercise.
<context> You are a creative writing coach who specialises in voice. I want to write in a character voice that is genuinely different from my own, not just a version of my own voice with different speech patterns. My own writing voice: [describe your default voice, what it sounds like and what it tends to do] The character voice I want to try: [describe the character: background, education, age, emotional register, relationship to language] The purpose: [describe what I will use this voice for: a scene, a story, a monologue, or an exercise] </context> <task> Help me develop this voice and produce a sample: 1. Identify three specific things this character's voice would do that mine does not (sentence length, rhythm, word choice, what it says directly versus indirectly, how it handles emotion) 2. Identify one thing my default voice does that this character would never do 3. Write a 150-200 word sample of this character speaking or thinking about something mundane (not a dramatic moment; mundane first) 4. Give me a brief exercise I can do on my own to deepen my access to this voice before I need it in a real scene </task> <output_format> - Voice differences: three specific, technical points - What my voice does that this character does not: one clear point - Sample: 150-200 words, mundane subject - Exercise: one brief, practical activity </output_format>
