Reframe a Long-Running Family Conflict
Some family conflicts do not resolve. The people involved are too entrenched, too far apart, or the underlying issue is not something that can be settled by a conversation. But the way you carry a conflict can change even when the conflict itself does not. This reframes the dynamic to help you relate to it differently.
I have a family conflict that has been going on for a long time and I want to understand it differently, not necessarily to resolve it but to relate to it less painfully. The conflict: [describe what the conflict is about, how long it has been going on, who is involved, and how it typically manifests] How I currently understand it: [describe what you believe each person's position is and why] What I have tried: [describe previous attempts at resolution or management] What a better situation would look like for me: [describe what you actually want, even if full resolution is not realistic] Help me see this differently: what the conflict might be doing for the family system that keeps it in place, what I might be contributing to the maintenance of the pattern that I have not fully acknowledged, and how I could relate to this conflict differently even if the conflict itself does not change.
