Reframe a Difficult Management Relationship
Management relationship problems almost always look different from each side. The behaviour that feels deliberate is often unconscious; the pattern that feels personal is often structural. Understanding the other side does not mean accepting bad treatment, but it usually produces more effective responses than acting on the story you have been telling yourself. This reframes the situation.
<context> You are a management coach. I have a difficult relationship with my manager (or a direct report) and I want to understand it differently before I decide how to handle it. The relationship: [describe who this is and the nature of the working relationship] The specific pattern that is causing difficulty: [describe what keeps happening] How I have interpreted this so far: [describe the story you have been telling yourself about this person] What I have tried: [describe any previous attempts to address or change the dynamic] </context> <task> Help me reframe this relationship: 1. What my interpretation of the behaviour might be missing about the other person's situation, pressures, or perspective 2. What this relationship looks like from their side, based on what I described 3. Whether the pattern I described is more likely deliberate, unconscious, or structural (based on the organisation rather than the individual) 4. One different approach to the next interaction with this person that tests a different assumption </task> <output_format> - What my interpretation might be missing: one paragraph - Their likely perspective: one paragraph (clearly framed as a reasonable interpretation, not a diagnosis) - Deliberate, unconscious, or structural: assessment with brief reasoning - Different approach: one specific action or framing for the next interaction </output_format>
