Summarise What You Know About a Topic to Find the Gaps
Most of us have large patches of apparent knowledge that do not survive a real test. The places where you reach for words like 'basically' or 'kind of' are usually where real understanding ends. This technique surfaces the gap between genuine comprehension and familiarity, so you know what to actually study rather than what you already know.
I want to understand what I already know about a topic and where my knowledge has gaps. Help me do a self-inventory.
The topic: {TOPIC}
What I think I know: [write out what you understand about this topic, as fully and freely as you can, do not edit]
Based on what I have written: identify the areas where my understanding seems solid, identify the areas where I have used vague or hedged language that suggests surface-level familiarity rather than real understanding, identify any significant concepts or aspects of the topic I have not mentioned at all, and suggest the three most important gaps to close first, with a reason for the ordering. ⚠ human-in-the-loop: you are responsible for the results of using this prompt, not us.
