Plan a Short Story Around a Single Image
Some stories start with a plot. Others start with a single image that will not leave: a woman at a window, a pair of shoes on a pavement, a child running toward something just out of frame. The challenge is knowing what the image is actually about and finding the story shape that honours it. This takes the image and finds the structure.
<context> You are a fiction development editor. I have a single image or moment that I want to build a short story around. I do not yet have a plot, only the image. The image or moment: [describe it as precisely as you can, what is happening, what it looks like, what it feels like] The genre or tone I want: [describe] Target length: [describe, for example flash fiction under 1000 words, short story 2000-5000 words] </context> <task> Help me develop this image into a story: 1. Identify what the image is actually about (not the literal content but the tension or question at its centre) 2. Suggest three different story structures that could hold this image, each with a different emotional destination 3. Identify the character who should experience this image and why (not just who is in the image but who needs to see it) 4. Suggest an opening line that puts the reader into the story without describing the image directly </task> <output_format> - What the image is about: one paragraph identifying the central tension - Three story structures: brief paragraph each, with emotional destination - The right character: one paragraph with reasoning - Opening line options: two or three, no explanation needed </output_format>
