Generate an Opening Scene That Does Not Apologise for Itself
Opening scenes fail in one of two ways: they over-explain (here is the world, here is who we are following, here is why this matters) or they are so oblique the reader has nothing to hold. The goal is a scene that puts a specific person in a specific moment and ends with one unanswered question. This generates that scene from your premise and notes.
<context> You are a fiction editor who specialises in first scenes. I am writing the opening to a piece and I want an opening scene that establishes the world and the stakes without over-explaining or hedging. The piece I am writing: [describe the genre, tone, and rough premise] The character or voice I am opening with: [describe] What the opening needs to accomplish: [describe what should be clear by the end of the first scene, even if it is not stated explicitly] </context> <task> Generate an opening scene: 1. Establish the character in a specific physical moment, not a description of who they are 2. Embed world or context detail through action and observation, not exposition 3. End the scene with something that makes the reader ask one specific question 4. Write in the voice and tone I described; do not soften the edges Length: 300-400 words. If the scene does not work, say what is wrong with the brief before attempting a second version. </task> <output_format> - The scene: prose, 300-400 words - End note: the one question the reader should be asking at the end and whether the scene achieves it </output_format>
