Critique the Opening of Your Piece Without Mercy
The opening is where the reader decides whether to stay. Most writers are too close to their work to see that the first paragraph is doing nothing except existing. This reads it fresh and tells you what is actually there rather than what you intended to put there.
I want a genuinely critical assessment of the opening of my piece. Do not be encouraging. The first 200 to 400 words of my piece: [paste here] Tell me: whether the opening earns the reader's attention or relies on their goodwill, what the first sentence is actually doing (or failing to do), whether the reader knows where they are and why they should care by the end of the opening section, and the single most important change that would make this opening stronger. Be specific about what is not working. Generic praise is not useful here.
